Spring Sprung
at Main Window
Spring Sprung is a mobile installation made from paper-pulp by Brooklyn-based, Japanese designer and artist, Yuko Nishikawa. Nishikawa hand forms the paper elements with air-dried clay made from used rolls of paper collected from artists and photographers in her Brooklyn studio building. The rich colors originate from the colors of the donated paper, with no added paints or pigments. To produce additional colors and textures, she combines multiple papers the way she would mix paints. The forms, which Nishikawa refers to as ‘cookies,’ are light-weight and durable when dry. When assembled with music wire into airy mobiles, the forms rotate slowly in the air. The project falls in line with Nishikawa’s special interest in creating objects and spaces inspired by traditional ideas but offering alternatives in a joyful way. The artist creates functions and rules for imaginary places and objects, making physical forms in ceramics. Nishkawa considers herself accomplished when her work transforms a space into a fascinating encounter.
