GALLERY I

A.I.R. Gallery is please to present Jinx, a new series of paintings by New York Artist member Jane Swavely.

Combinations of green, silver, purple and blue, demarcated bands of color, read as abstracted signs that reference an imagined, alien, future landscape, scenes from a forlorn unlocated present after an apocalyptic moment. These images are constructed through energetic brushstrokes and abrasions, interweaved with the search of light from within color.

Mining the history of abstraction, Swavely has produced hidden landscapes within the paintings, shifting perception, paring down, and removing context in order to evoke an emotive response. This decisive rejection of recognizable imagery in favor of felt experience is visible in the time required by each of the works. Upon entering the gallery, Swavely invites the viewer to confront an alluring, albeit macabre perspective, to reflect on our shared fears.

The works in the show are what the title suggests: a Jinx which foredooms the possibilities of what the natural environment is to look like once human existence is eradicated. Although Jinx refers to an omen of misfortune, it can also refer to the term used when two people say the same thing at the same time. The exhibition alludes to a collective tone felt across the political left. As if we have been jinxed into this moment of outspoken hatred, misogyny, racism and impending climatic disaster by our own hubris.
