Asphodel presents Material Control, an exhibition of new graphic works by Anastasia Komarova, opening on Tuesday 21 January and on view through Saturday 29 February.
Anastasia Komarova is an authentic flâneuse. A relatively new arrival to New York from her home country, the artist uncynically participates in our “urban inferno” [Sontag], somehow unencumbered by the “nervous stimulation” [G. Simmel] that afflicts the resident of this modern megalopolis.
Komarova’s drawings present monochromatic profusions of eliding axes that push and pull into unstable voids and neurotic forms. Trained as an architect, Komarova’s work depicts urban matrices–real, imagined (and virtual)–that are performative and voyeuristic. Her work is fundamentally optimistic. Komarova never retreats from the newness of an adopted city that is always open, always unfolding.
Komarova’s exploration and documentation of the odd hours and unquiet corners of Chinatown and the Lower East Side of Manhattan unfold through her amusing and arresting social media stories. These narratives serve as a tart counterpoint to the fabricated spaces presented in the series of drawings on display in this exhibition.
